Akili Chanya Initiative Tanzania Hosts Seminar on Child Rights and Abuse Prevention at Kilimahewa Modern Secondary School
Earlier today, Akili Chanya Initiative Tanzania held a vital seminar on child rights and abuse prevention at Kilimahewa Modern Secondary School, engaging 150 pre-form one students in an educational and empowering session. The seminar, led by experienced facilitators from Akili Chanya, aimed to deepen students’ understanding of child rights while providing critical knowledge on how to recognize, prevent, and respond to instances of child abuse.
The session began with an informative overview of child rights, encouraging students to recognize their inherent right to safety, dignity, and respect. Akili Chanya staff discussed the importance of self-advocacy and personal security, establishing a foundation for understanding how these rights protect them from harmful experiences.
During the seminar, facilitators provided comprehensive information on the different types of child abuse, addressing the serious nature of sexual, physical, and mental/psychological abuse. Each form of abuse was thoroughly explained, with a focus on helping students understand the impacts these abuses can have on individuals’ mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Through engaging discussions, the staff highlighted various indicators of abuse that students could recognize both in themselves and in peers, creating an environment of vigilance and mutual support.
Empowerment was a key theme of the day, with facilitators offering practical guidance on how students can assertively avoid unsafe situations by using strategies like confidently saying “No” when facing uncomfortable or dangerous interactions. Through role-playing activities and open dialogue, students practiced these skills, gaining confidence in their ability to protect themselves. The facilitators stressed that every student has the power to resist pressure and seek help if they feel threatened or unsafe.
The session also covered essential steps on how and where to report incidences of abuse. Students were encouraged to identify trusted adults within their families, school, and community, and were informed about local resources and helplines available for immediate assistance. Akili Chanya’s team emphasized the message that reporting abuse is an act of courage and self-care, and that help is always available.
Kilimahewa Modern Secondary School was thrilled to host this seminar, expressing gratitude to Akili Chanya Initiative Tanzania for addressing such an important and sensitive topic. By equipping students with knowledge and skills on child rights and abuse prevention, Akili Chanya continues to demonstrate its dedication to fostering safe, supportive environments for youth across Tanzania. Through programs like these, the organization is creating lasting impacts on individual lives and communities, empowering young people to advocate for themselves and others.
As one of several seminars Akili Chanya plans to conduct in local schools, today’s session underscores the organization’s commitment to child welfare, mental health, and community empowerment. The Kilimahewa community looks forward to future collaborations with Akili Chanya to continue addressing the challenges young people face and to provide ongoing support in their personal and academic journeys.
